Environua Trust: Levin

We are a newly formed charitable trust (dec 05). We started 2 years ago as an advisory group to the Horowhenua District Council (HDC), with the task of advising the council on the best ways to promote recycling and divert material away from the landfill. Our advice centered on the establishment of a resource recovery facility (RRF), which would be run by a community group (in this case a trust). Presently we are finalizing plans with the owners of the regions transfer station to build a recovery facility at the transfer station.

Education

Environua's full time Waste Education Officer currently delivers waste education to two schools on a weekly basis following the Wastebusters Canterbury Trust Waste Education Programme.

Six local families are also engaged in a pilot waste education trial. Waste Education Officer has gone into family homes and together they have strategised most suitable systems for waste reduction and waste separation including building composts and worm farms. Environua are working with an IHC service provider. There are presently 5 houses engaged in a trial with a further 12 potentials (once the trial results are configured).

In the preliminary stages of working with a Marae including setting up systems and providing recycling bins.

Presently putting together a curriculum to take to a secondary school for evening classes.

Three events to be managed over the next six months including; Easter Fair, Mankukau Medieval Market and the Organic River Festival.

Environua is using its MfE milestones as a basis for its Waste Education plan for the next 12months. The night classes and IHC work are additional to the agreement it has with MfE.

In the preliminary stages of building stage one of a three stage recycle centre in partnership with Envirowaste. The education programme will also be based at the centre.
